Mr. Popper's Penguins

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, young Tommy Popper looks forward to the moments when, on his tiptoes to reach a ham radio in his bedroom, he can talk to his world-traveling father. Years later, Tommy is now Mr. Popper, a highly successful real estate developer in Manhattan. Amicably divorced from Amanda, with two children he sees on alternate weekends, Mr. Popper lives the life of luxury in his ultra-modern Park Avenue apartment and is well on his way to becoming partner at his prestigious firm. That is, until the morning a final gift from Popper's late father, a souvenir from Antarctica, arrives in a crate at Popper's front door.

Inside the wooden box, nestled amongst ice packs, is a two-foot tall penguin with bright orange feet. Not a toy penguin, or a stuffed bird from the taxidermist, as Popper at first assumes, but a real, live penguin, who scampers across Popper's floor and emits loud honks. Eager to be rid of this wild creature, Popper contacts every city and state agency imaginable, but no one is willing to take a pet penguin. His call to Antarctica to try to ship the bird back instead results in the arrival of another five penguins at Popper's door.

As he gets acquainted and increasingly attached to his winged roommates, Popper's life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he's long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. But thanks to his new charges, Popper comes to understand the importance of family, human and otherwise.

Bond 23 stalled

The shooting of a new James Bond movie in India has been stalled after the production house couldn't get the permission to shoot.

The makers of the movie, tentatively titled Bond 23, wanted to shoot high-speed stunts on the Indian Railways. However, they could not get the permissions due to safety issues and as a result director Sam Mendes is now looking for alternative locations.

"It has been one thing after another. The scenes are very ambitious and we're all just desperate to get started but there have been obstacles at every stage," mirror.co.uk quoted a production insider as saying.

India's railways minister Dinesh Trivedi has now decided to "look into the matter", but added: "I can't jeopardize the safety of passengers."

The shooting is likely to move to South Africa, where producers already have permission to shoot some scenes, but not until January.

Megan Fox to remove Marilyn Monroe tattoo

Hollywood star Megan Fox is removing her tattoo of screen siren Marilyn Monroe in a bid to avoid attracting negative energy.

"I'm removing it. It is a negative character, as she suffered from personality disorders and was bipolar. I do not want to attract this kind of negative energy in my life," said the 25-year-old actress who began the laser treatment on her forearm inking earlier this year.

Talking about the meaning behind her Monroe tattoo, Fox had previously said, "I really admire Marilyn Monroe, but I would never try to emulate her. I got the tattoo as a warning. It warns me not to let myself be treated so badly by the film industry so that it breaks me down."

It's not the only thing Fox has grown to regret - she also removed her navel piercing when she was 20.

"I did it when I was 16 years old because I was a fan of Britney Spears. The only time I tried to imitate someone else. But then I thought it was tacky and so I removed it when I turned 20," she said.

The 'Transformers' actress has around nine tattoos and her other inkings include a quote on her shoulder reading 'We will all laugh at gilded butterflies' and a tribal mark on her left wrist.

She also has a tribute to her 'Passion Play' co-star Mickey Rourke, 57.

"Mickey is such a beautiful, wonderful human being. He's so genuine and so sweet and so talented. I just love him to death. I actually got a tattoo that is sort of in honour of him. It's on my ribs," said Fox.

Getting n#de was easier: Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway has admitted it was easier for her to shoot the nude scenes than mastering British accent for her role in One Day.

The 28-year old plays a Yorkshire girl Emma in the movie and insists she was more comfortable stripping off for a dipping scene with her co-star Jim Sturgess than speaking in her character's regional dialect, reports contactmusic.com.

"I was more nervous about the accent than nudity. I mean, you can do sit-ups as prep for the nudity. But there aren't a lot of vocal sit-ups that you can do. Maybe it's because I have more experience in my life being naked than pretending to be British," she said.

"So I got more comfortable quickly with the nudity than I did with the accent," she added.

Lilo sues Pitbull over defamatory lyrics

Better late than never or in the case of Hollywood's troubled star Lindsay Lohan always late and maybe never.

According to the reports, Lilo is taking Cuban-American rapper Pitbull to court over the lyrics of his party hit 'Give Me Everything'. She claims that "the lyrics, by virtue of its wide appeal, condemnation, excoriation, disparaging or defamatory statements by the defendants about the plaintiff are destined to do irreparable harm to the plaintiff."

A line of the song goes, "I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan."

In the court documents, Lohan says that as "A professional actor of good repute and standing in the Screen Actors Guild, she is suing under the New York civil rights laws, which protects people from having their name exploited for commercial purposes."

Interestingly, the song was released 5 months ago in March this year. It took Lilo almost half a year to wake up to the "irreparable harm" that the song was causing her.

Her lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, told E! News, "The problem is they used her name without compensation in the song, and confused the public about whether or not she was a collaborator."

The co-defendants, alongwith Pitbull, Ne-yo and Afrojack are co-writers of the song.

No comments from Pitbull's camp so far.

Meanwhile, check out the Miggs' video 'Let the games begin' feat Lindsay Lohan.

Sean Penn to be honored with lifetime achievement award

Two time Academy-Award-winning actor Sean Penn will be presented with a lifetime achievement award at the Zurich Film Festival on September 28.

The 51-year-old will be given the Golden Icon Award, which is the festival's highest honour, for his remarkable film career, said the Hollywood Reporter.

The festival will present a retrospective of Penn's work and also screen his directorial effort Into the Wild.

"Sean Penn is a man whose remarkable film career is matched only by his extraordinary and ongoing humanitarian pursuits that have helped improve so many lives. On screen, and off, Sean has a legendary presence and is revered around the world.

"He is one of the finest actors of our generation and defines the term icon. We are both honoured and excited to have him attend the Zurich Film Festival and accept the Golden Icon Award," said ZFF director Karl Spoerri.

Penn is currently appearing on screen in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life with Brad Pitt and will also be seen in the upcoming This Must Be the Place.

Sex and the City 3: Coming soon

Carrie Bradshaw's fans need not be disappointed as a third Sex and the City movie is inching towards reality, says lead star Sarah Jessica Parker.

The 46-year-old actress who played the popular character in the successful TV series and two movies, says they have found a story for the third movie, the Hollywood Reporter said.

"There is. I know what the story is. It's a small story, but I think it should be told. The question is, what's the right time to tell it?" Parker said.

The second movie, where the action shifts to Abu Dhabi, was critically panned for its insensitive portrayal of the Muslim world with makers indicating that they might not take the story forward.

Parker's comments seem to lend credence to the theory that a third film would not be a prequel with younger starcast.

"My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43. I didn't even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw's parents were because I thought she only existed in Manhattan. So for me, the idea of going backwards and making her less evolved ... is something that I don't imagine doing," show runner Michael Patrick King had said.

Last month, rumours surfaced that the project will feature young stars such as Elizabeth Olsen, Emma Roberts, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez as Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte respectively. Also the film will be based upon The Carrie Diaries and Summer and the City.

"Dirty Dancing" reboot

While some "Dirty Dancing" fans can't fathom the idea of Johnny and Baby as anyone other than the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, Lisa Niemi (Patrick's widow) has given her seal of approval to the newly-announced reboot.

"Jennifer [Grey] and I have been talking and she's been so supportive, as has Lisa Swayze and [producer] Eleanor Bernstein," Kenny Ortega - who choreographed the original 1987 film and will direct the reboot - told Us Weekly at Wednesday's "So You Think You Can Dance" finale in Los Angeles. "I couldn't be more thankful for the outreach that has happened from the cast and crew members from the original movie. They've all said 'Go, Ken!'"

While Kenny is excited about giving the film a modern touch, he admits it will be a challenge to find actors who can bring the characters to life as well as their beloved predecessors.

"Patrick and Jennifer brought so much, and the chemistry that they had with each other -- I just want to find that match," he told the mag.

As for a possible cameo by Jennifer Grey, Kenny said it's being considered.

"If it's organic, right and makes sense," Kenny said, when asked if the original Baby and recent "Dancing with the Stars" champ would be seen in the new film. "I would love nothing more."

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Jennifer took to Twitter on Monday to express her excitement over the "Dirty Dancing" movie news.

"I love @Kennyortega and trust that he will do something special #DirtyDancingRemake," Jennifer Tweeted on Monday night.

"Blown away by all of the love expressed for #DirtyDancing. Makes me want to see it again. So grateful to have been a part of it," she later added.

"Bridget Jones" Trilogy

Dust off that diary, Renee Zellweger.

Working Title Films is moving forward with a third installment of the "Bridget Jones" films, according to Entertainment Weekly.

While no additional details were immediately available, Colin Firth - who plays the lovably noble Mark Darcy in the hit movies -- spilled plot details to Access Hollywood guest correspondent Dave Karger last year.

"I can tell you that Bridget and Mark can't have children, I think that's the way it goes on," Colin said at the time. "So then she makes the huge mistake of going back to Daniel Cleaver [played by Hugh Grant] for long enough to get pregnant. And I think he dumps her, and she's left stranded, and guess who comes back to rescue her?"

Additionally, back in March, the London Evening Standard reported that Helen Fielding (author of the wildly popular "Bridget Jones" novels on which the films are based) had begun working on a third book.

"I will be working on both the book and the film but I don't know if they are the same thing yet. It's not been decided," Helen said.

The first film, "Bridget Jones's Diary," released in 2001, grossed $281 million internationally, while 2004's sequel, "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," took in $262 million, according to EW.

Final Destination 5

Though ostensibly successful, 2009’s The Final Destination represented to many a horror franchise on its last hackneyed legs. Rote, uninspired and humorless, it scored a (modest) hit only by virtue of the novelty -- and added ticket price -- of its 3D transfer. Two years later, Final Destination 5 arrives with a slightly tweaked formula, a beefed-up storyline, actors you might actually recognize, and genuine, honest-to-goodness 3D. It’s still schlock, mind you -- but artful schlock, and a marked improvement over the preceding entry.

The story begins in familiar fashion, with a cursory introduction to the characters, followed by a grisly premonition that sees them perish wholesale. An assortment of cubicle-dwellers at a paper factory are being bused to a corporate retreat when one of them, Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto, perpetually bug-eyed), dreams of a massive bridge collapse in which he and his co-workers are impaled, beheaded, bisected, crushed by cars, singed by tar -- however many ways a suspension bridge can kill a person, the film’s opening set-piece explores it gruesome detail. Sam awakens, duly horrified, and demands the bus be evacuated. Seconds later, the employees watch in horror from the sidelines as Sam’s vision comes to fruition.

You know what happens next. One-by-one, death stalks the survivors, who meet their fate in a series of elaborately-staged incidents. Some are relatively straightforward; others involve fiendish head-fakes and red herrings. The range of victims is older and more colorful than in previous Final Destination films, in which death preyed exclusively on attractive, nubile teenagers, but the end result is invariably the same. (Not to give anything away, but those considering acupuncture or laser eye surgery would be wise to avoid the film entirely.) As death’s scheme becomes achingly evident, Sam, his lachrymose girlfriend, Molly (Emma Bell), and his increasingly unhinged buddy, Peter (Miles Fisher), become increasingly desperate. Enter the ever-ominous Tony Todd, returning to the franchise after (wisely) taking the previous film off, offering a potential way out. But is it genuine, or just another of death’s cruel tricks?

Director Steven Quale, a James Cameron protege hired principally for his 3D expertise, takes full advantage of the added dimension, delivering some of the most vivid and immersive 3D sequences in recent memory. Unlike The Final Destination, which seemed little more than a amalgam of crude one-liners, Final Destination 5 feels like a real movie, one with a discernible plot, an element of suspense, and a handful characters who are more than just punchlines. Most of the actors are surprisingly competent, save for Fisher, a credible doppelganger for Tom Cruise (he parodied him 2008’s Superhero Movie) who imbues every line with couch-jumping intensity.

Final Destination 5 ends with a twist that, while genuinely unexpected, feels like a Hail Mary for a franchise that can’t forestall its inexorable descent into stale irrelevance, despite the best of efforts from Quale. Its trademark formula has simply lost its potency -- a problem no amount of cosmetic upgrades, however welcome, can fix. That the film is bracketed by two pointless and time-consuming montages -- the first an animated sequence that hurtles various hazardous objects at the audience, the second a greatest hits compilation of memorable kills from previous Final Destination films -- is a telltale sign that the saga’s creativity is on life support. Perhaps it’s time to pull the plug.

The Change-Up

The first five minutes of The Change-Up—a horrifying look into the world of late-night baby care, complete with one of the more grotesque poop-to-face shots ever captured on film—sums up the movie's bait-and-switch. In most comedies, this scene would be the first step towards a descent into hell that only Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Adam Sandler are capable of realizing. In The Change-Up, it's a sequence that sets the bar as low as artistically possible, so stars Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds can obliterate expectations with equally raunchy, shocking and hilarious comedic stylings. Simply put, The Change-Up is the funniest movie of the year.

Bateman plays Dave Lockwood, a run-of-the-mill lawyer who works too hard, juggles his parenting duties and struggles to find time to tell his wife he loves her. Dave's best friend Mitch (Reynolds) couldn't be more of the opposite—sleeping all day and spending his conscious hours wooing sexual partners while stoned out of his mind. The two are polar opposites, making them the perfect candidates for a little bit of switcheroo magic. One particularly devastating night of alcohol and lamenting life's woes ends with the duo taking a leak into a magical fountain (go with it). Fate, of course, intervenes and when Dave and Mitch wake up, they find themselves trapped in the one another's bodies.

There's no denying The Change-Up follows the Freaky Friday formula—but that's not a fault. The logic is already established, giving Bateman, Reynolds and director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) freedom to jump right into the crass humor hook. Bateman, who's becoming a go-to straight man in Hollywood, finds a refreshing opportunity in inhabiting Reynold's Mitch. The character's lack of self-censorship opens the floodgates for Bateman to poetically surface some of the English language's more horrendous sentences. A slang dictionary may be required to understand what bizarre body part synonyms are being dropped at rapid pace in this movie. Whether you comprehended them or not, when they come out of Bateman's mouth, they're priceless.

Same goes for Reynolds, who escapes the box of fast-talking womanizer to play the uncomfortable family man. Judging an actor's versatility on a scene in which he's unwillingly placed at the center of a "lorno" (read: low-budget soft core pornography) may seem twisted, but Reynolds sells it and makes it perfectly agonizing. Even obvious scenarios like, "uh oh, Dave's going to have to cheat on his wife in Mitch's body!" are twisted once, twice, three times over to pull the rug from under you.

The biggest surprise of The Change-Up is the movie's heart. Pummeling an audience with jokes is one thing, but to sell genuine relationships underneath it makes it satisfying. The wavering friendship between the two lead knuckleheads is tangible and keeps an impossible plot device grounded, while Leslie Mann (Knocked Up, Funny People), as Dave's wife Jamie, has her fair share of tender moments (as well as devilish laughs—there's a reason her husband Judd Apatow keeps casting her). In a movie that's constructed by textbook rules, to have an ending that resonates with any sort of emotion is as surprising as watching a grown man toss a baby down next to a set of steak knives. Which, coincidentally, also happens in the movie.

In today's world where anything goes, it's hard to whip up slapstick and one-liners that feel edgy and that leave your jaw on the floor. That's how The Change-Up hits—and it hits hard.
